Liong Tek Go Family Association Centennial
The Go Families' ancestors, starting from Tai Bei Kong of Shanxi
Province, China, took the first step to migrate sometime from
618 AD in the Tang Dynasty, continuing through 1368 A.D. in the
Ming Dynasty and up to 1644 during the Ching Dynasty. The Go
Families' ancestors, starting from Tai Bei Kong of Shanxi
Province, China, took the first step to migrate sometime from
618 AD in the Tang Dynasty, continuing through 1368 A.D. in the
Ming Dynasty and up to 1644 during the Ching Dynasty.
Some eventually found their way to the
Philippines where they settled, established their businesses,
got married, raised and educated their children. By 1908, the Go
families in the Philippines had grown substantially that it was
increasingly becoming difficult to keep track of who belonged to
which family and how each were related. It was then, 100 years
ago that the Go Family in the Philippines decided to establish
the Liong Tek Go Family Association, initially as a social club,
to keep the families in touch with each other. However, through
the years, the Liong Tek Go Family Association has slowly
evolved to become not only a social club, but also as a
charitable institution as well as providing educational, medical
and financial assistance to needy members of the Go families.
The Go Families
continued to grow and spread throughout the country so that by
1948, after World War II,
the
first Liong Tek Go Family Association provincial chapter was
established in Leyte, Samar. Two years later, in 1950 another
chapter was established in Cebu. In 1958, the Liong Tek Go
Family Association celebrated their 50th Golden Anniversary. On
February 21, 1964 a tragedy struck, the big Chinatown fire razed
the Association's two-storey structure to the ground.
By February 1966,
the families had banded together and raised enough funds to
erect a new five-storey building. In 1969, a Zamboanga chapter
was established, followed in 1971 by a chapter in Davao City,
Cagayan de Oro;
in 1981 Iloilo, Surigao in 1990,
Bacolod in 1991,
Central
and Northern Luzon Chapter in 2007, and, the Bicol region
chapter in March 2008. This year the Liong Tek Go Family
Association will celebrate their 100-year milestone. It
continues to grow and thrive, hoping to bring in a more dynamic
younger generation.
