ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA UNIVERISTY - 100TH ANNIVERSARY

In 1912, Ateneo de Zamboanga was established as Escuela Catolica, a small parochial school. The Spanish Jesuits runs the school, located at the old site of Immaculate Conception. It began serving the community by educating and instilling the values of St. Ignatius of Loyola to young people’s minds under the leadership of Fr. Manuel M. Sauras. It became Ateneo de Zamboanga in 1916.

The school was closed down during the World War II. The Japanese used it as a public elementary school, until it was shelled and bombed by the American forces on March 8 and 9 in 1945 prior to the liberation of the city. The High School was reopened in 1947.

In 1948, Ateneo de Zamboanga was officially recognized as Jesuit school, separate from the parish. This momentous change gave rise to what we now know as the century – old tradition of Jesuit Education.

College was established in 1952 and the Graduate school first program started in 1976.

In the 1980′s, Fr. Ernesto A. Carretero, SJ worked to acquire a university status. Fr. William H Kreutz, SJ continued the efforts when he became the president of Ateneo de Zamboanga in 1989. On August 10, 2001, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted the University Status and the Full Deregulation and Autonomy by CHED was given on the same year.

Today, after 100 years of existence, Ateneo de Zamboanga University continues its mission of working for progress particularly in Western Mindanao. At present there are two undergraduate schools and three colleges (Arts and Sciences, Education, Management and Accountancy, Science and Information Technology and Nursing); three professional schools (Graduate School, School of Medicine and the College of Law in partnership with Xavier University). Its overall population is now 6,822 and with its new building in Tumaga, Ateneo de Zamboanga has been constantly gearing up for a wider horizon and a promising future beyond.
