RAMON O. VALERA, NATIONAL ARTIST FOR
ALLIED ARTS - FASHION DESIGN CENTENARY
A Filipino designer from
1930's to 1960's known for his elegant gowns and
ternos. Named National Artist in 2006, he is the first National
Artist in Fashion. He was also one of the first male fashion
designers. He began his career in design in 1935. Among his
illustrious clients were First Ladies
Aurora Quezon and
Imelda Marcos and actress
Gloria Romero. He made innovations to the terno, making it one
piece and doing away with the
tapis and
panuelo.

More than a shining
National Artist, Valera was known to have created gowns for
international beauties like Queen Sirikit of Thailand and US First
Lady Ladybird Johnson. He was very meticulous and very particular
about the women who would wear his gowns. Each gown can only be worn
by the muse he had designed it for.
Beyond artistry, the man was a visionary and a trailblazer.
His works are still being studied by fashion students and artists
alike. How many couturiers
could boast of not using patterns (he worked directly on fabrics,
using only his imagination) and of treating their beads, appliques,
cloth as if they were paint and canvas? It has been said that Valera
refuses to be called a fashion designer — he is undoubtedly more of
an artist than a designer.
