Popular Fruits of the Philippines

ARATILESFRUIT (Muntingia calabura).    Aratiles fruit is small, about the size of a blueberry.   Green when unripe but orange to red as it ripens.   It is juicy, somewhat gelatinous inside.  Hundreds of tiny yellow seeds give a nice texture.    It is sweet with cotton candy smell and flavor.

ROSE APPLE (Syzygium samarangense).   Commonly known as Makopa fruit, is bell shaped with a waxy skin and comes in pink, white, green and purple. It has a crisp, light (airy or spongy) white pulp that is mild in flavor.  While the fruit is delicious on its own, it is sometimes used for medicinal purposes also.

STRAWBERRY (Fragaria ananassa).   Philippine Strawberies are grown in Benguet Province because of its cold climate.  La Trinidad, Benguet, approximately 210 km away from Manila, is known as the "Strawberry Capital of the Philippines”.  This province was once recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records for baking the largest strawberry cake.
