100 YEARS OF PHILIPPINE CINEMA
The Film
Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is commemorating 100
years of cinema in the Philippines on 12 September 2019 through
“Sine Sandaan: Celebrating the Luminaries of Philippine Cinema” as
well as the issuance of commemorative stamps by the Philippine
Postal Corporation (PHLPost) entitled “SANDAAN - Celebrating 100
Years of Philippine Cinema”.
PHLPost is
releasing stamps, souvenir sheets, and official first-day covers for
this monumental celebration. Featured on the stamp is the logo of
SANDAAN appearing on a stylized movie ticket, highlighting the dates
1919-2019. The souvenir sheet presents acclaimed director and
producer Jose Nepomuceno, considered by many as the “Father of
Philippine Movies”. His film Dalagang Bukid was the first
Filipino-produced silent film, starring Atang de la Rama and
Marcellano Ilagan. Dalagang Bukid was released on 12 September 1919.
The FDCP will
lead the year-long celebration of the Centennial Year of Philippine
Cinema, which begins on 12 September 2019 and will culminate on 11
September 2020, per Presidential Proclamation No. 622 Series of
2018.
