National Electrification Administration
(NEA) - 50 Years of Rural Electrification
The National Electrification Administration (NEA) was formally
founded via Republic Act (R.A.) 6038 on 28 of July 28, 1969 but the
history of the nation's electrification began with the enactment of
R.A. 2717, which brought the "Electrification Administration" into
being. Its motivation was to carry out the national policy of
providing inexpensive and reliable electrification to advance
agricultural and industrial fields in the Philippines. It was
officially designated a "government owned and controlled
corporation" (GOCC) under Presidential Decree (P.D.) 269. In just
three years hence, the Philippine Rural Electrification program was
made a model for other developing nations in the world. 2019 marks
the 501" year that NEA has been responsible for the electrification
of the Philippines' rural areas.
The NEA has also been mandated to reinforce Electric Cooperatives
(ECs) in the countryside by ensuring an open-access and competitive
environment. Some notable achievements include: the launching of the
O-ILAW Project in 2001, being awarded as one of the Top 3 GOCC in
the Government Energy Management Program in 2006, and the
energization of NEA's twelve millionth customer in 2017. Most
recently, the NEA was conferred an Unqualified Audit Opinion on
their financial position by the Commission on Audit for the tenth
year straight.
The success of NEA is the manifestation of its vision and mission,
which caters to the Filipinos by providing electrification which
propagates sustainable rural development all over the Philippines.
