500 Battle of Mactan - 500th Year Anniversary
Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines
The Battle of
Mactan was a fierce clash fought in the Philippines on 27 April
1521. The warriors of Lapulapu, one of the Datus of Mactan,
overpowered and defeated a Spanish force fighting for Rajah Humabon
of Cebu under the command of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan,
who was killed in the battle.
The first day of issue of these stamps fall on the 27th of April,
on the five-hundred year anniversary of the victory of our forebear,
Lapulapu, in the Battle of Mactan. From
here on, April 27 will be known by all future generations not just
as the day when our people were victorious and valiant, but also as
the day Filipinos worldwide acknowledged our place on the world
stage as a significant contributor to the development and progress
of humanity.
