National Heritage Month:
Kalayaan ay Pamana (Freedom is Heritage)
125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood
The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost)
issues special stamps on 2 May 2023, entitled “Kalayaan ay Pamana”
with the Filipino Heritage Festival Inc. (FHFI), in line with the
National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in commemorating
National Heritage Month 2023.
Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 439,
s. 2003, National Heritage Month is annually observed during the
month of May. The theme for this year’s NHM is “Heritage: Change and
Continuity”, or “Pamana: Pagpapatuloy at Pagbabago”, and “Kalayaan
ay Pamana” (Freedom is Heritage) is issued for this month-long
celebration of Philippine heritage.
This is in solidarity with the 125th Anniversary
of Philippine Independence and Nationhood (12 June 2023 – 23 March
2026). “Kalayaan ay Pamana” presents eight (8) buildings which are
venues vital to the narrative of Philippine independence. These
heritage structures are highlighted for they are directly associated
with the birth of the Filipino nation, the first democracy and
constitutional republic in the whole of Asia. Kalayaan ay
Pamana asserts that Philippine Independence and Nationhood is
heritage. As such, both are fundamental to national identity.
These postage stamps remind Filipinos of the necessity to
prioritize, protect, and propagate independence and nationhood as
heritage and inheritance for the public good, and for future
generations.
