FERNANDO BAUTISTA - FOUNDER
UNIVERSITY OF BAGUIO
On August 8, 1948, Dr. and Mrs. Fernando
Bautista founded what was at first known as Baguio Technical and
Commercial Institute. With the school's increasing population and
outstanding performance as an educational institution, it was
granted university status on August 7, 1969 and renamed University
of Baguio. The University Charter was signed by then Secretary of
Education, Dr. Onofre D. Corpuz in appropriate investiture rites
attended by ranking officials of the Department of Education, City
Officials, Heads/Representatives of 20 educational institutions in
the USA and Great Britain, and Presidents of more than 60 Philippine
colleges and universities. Dr. Fernando Bautista was installed as
the first President of University of Baguio.
As a public
servant, Fernando Bautista authored educational measures during his
term as delegate of Baguio and Benguet to the 1971 Constitutional
Convention. In his lifetime, he tried to fulfill his passion of
providing affordable education to the youth until his demise in 2002
at the age of 94.
